FC Balboa U14 Gains Invaluable Experience Against FC Bayern Munich U15 Academy

Yesterday, the FC Balboa U14 Blue squad, led by Coaches John Matich and Jon Chan, took the pitch at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center for a premier test against the FC Bayern Munich U15 Academy team.

The scrimmage was particularly special as it coincided with the launch of FC Bayern’s first-ever residential academy in the United States, which officially opened its doors this September. Headquartered at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center—an official U.S. Olympic and Paralympic training site—the program serves as a central pillar of the global FC Bayern Pathway. Built in direct alignment with the FC Bayern Campus methodology in Munich, the newly minted academy brings authentic European elite player development and holistic training standards directly to Southern California.

Arranging this high-caliber fixture was made possible thanks to Coach John Matich, whose background as a former national team player and extensive connections throughout elite soccer helped bring this international powerhouse to our doorstep. Having competed at the highest levels of the sport, Coach John recognizes the immense value of immersing developing athletes in world-class environments.

Taking on a full one-year age gap against Bayern's U15 squad presented an exceptional standard of play. From the opening sequence, yesterday's match showcased the hallmark sophistication of European academy soccer: deliberate tempo, tactical cohesion, and sharp spatial awareness. Our boys rose to meet the occasion with composure and resolve, executing with confidence, managing sustained spells of pressure, and showcasing their ability to problem-solve against physically mature opposition.
