For anyone who grew up in San Diego in the late 70s and 80s, professional football was synonymous with one name: the San Diego Sockers. Originally playing outdoors in the North American Soccer League (NASL), the Sockers captured the city's heart. But it was their move indoors that transformed them into a dynasty.
Playing in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), the Sockers were a powerhouse, winning an incredible 10 championships between 1982 and 1992. They dominated the sport, playing a fast-paced, exciting brand of football that packed the San Diego Sports Arena and created a generation of lifelong fans. They proved that San Diego wasn't just a baseball or American football town—it was a football town.

The In-Between Years: Keeping the Flame Alive
After the original NASL folded and the MISL landscape changed, San Diego went through a period without a high-profile outdoor professional team. But the passion never died. The Sockers continued in various forms of indoor football, and other teams like the San Diego Flash (A-League) kept the professional game alive in the 90s and 2000s.
Most importantly, the foundation of our football culture was being built on fields all across the county. The youth football scene in San Diego exploded, becoming one of the most vibrant and competitive in the nation. This is where the real legacy was being forged—in the thousands of kids who, inspired by the teams that came before them, fell in love with the game.

The Modern Era: The Loyal Reignite the Dream
In 2019, the passion for outdoor professional football was reignited with the arrival of the San Diego Loyal SC. Playing in the USL Championship, the Loyal did more than just win games; they built a true community. For four seasons, the Loyal gave us a team to rally behind, proving that the appetite for high-level, outdoor football was stronger than ever.

Just as the Loyal were capturing the city's heart, another professional team arrived and took San Diego by storm. In 2022, the San Diego Wave FC kicked off their inaugural season in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), the top tier of women's professional football in the US.
The Wave's impact was immediate and historic. Led by international superstars like Alex Morgan, the team was an instant success, breaking league attendance records and making the playoffs in their very first year. They brought a new level of excitement and excellence to the city, proving that San Diego is a passionate and supportive home for women's professional sports. The Wave not only provided a platform for world-class athletes but also inspired a new generation of young female players across Southern California.
